Monica Barbaro’s portrayal of Joan Baez in the Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown” has been making waves in Hollywood. Recently, Monica Barbaro had the chance to meet the legendary folk singer herself, marking a significant moment in her career. 

A Serendipitous Meeting 

At the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund’s 30th anniversary benefit concert, Monica Barbaro and Joan Baez crossed paths for the first time. Barbaro shared her excitement on Instagram, posting a photo with Baez and a video of the singer performing her classic “Diamonds and Rust.” She captioned the post, “A beautiful night in so many ways. Absolutely surreal. Joan. You.” 

Embodying an Icon 

Taking on the role of Joan Baez was no small feat for Barbaro. She dedicated nearly a year to mastering Baez’s guitar style and vocal nuances. This commitment paid off, as her performance earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Reflecting on the experience, Barbaro expressed her admiration for Baez, stating, “I loved what she did in the film.”

Joan Baez, now 84, has been a monumental figure in folk music and activism. Regarding the biopic and Barbaro’s portrayal, Baez shared her thoughts, noting that while she found the experience surreal, she appreciated the dedication and authenticity Barbaro brought to the role.

Directed by James Mangold, “A Complete Unknown” delves into Bob Dylan’s rise in the 1960s, highlighting his relationships with key figures like Baez. The film has garnered critical acclaim, securing eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of Dylan has also been widely praised.
